A Brief History of the Galette des Rois
The tradition of the Galette des Rois dates back to the Middle Ages when Benedictine monks introduced the cake in France to celebrate the Christian holiday of Epiphany. This holiday commemorates the Three Kings’ visit to the infant Jesus. Originally, the Galette was made with almond frangipane and puff pastry, with a small fava bean hidden inside.
Over time, the fava bean evolved into a small ceramic, porcelain, or plastic figurine, often depicting Baby Jesus or another religious symbol. Traditionally, the cake is eaten on January 6, twelve days after Christmas. As part of the custom, one slice is often reserved for someone in need.
Today, the Galette des Rois comes with a golden paper crown, and finding the hidden fava bean or almond remains a cherished moment that crowns one lucky eater king or queen.
